The energy transition equals the port transition. Under this motto, we are driving the development of the Port of Den Helder. The close connection between energy and the port is embedded in Den Helder’s strategic location, with its proximity to the North Sea, centrally located among future wind farms.
The port development strategy is shaped along three transition pathways:
- Expanding space in the seaport to facilitate the maintenance of wind farms;
- Shifting from offshore gas landing to a sustainable energy cluster;
- Advancing the sustainability of the port.
The establishment of Nature Energy’s biogas plant aligns perfectly with this strategy. Green gas production is a key component of the future energy cluster and will contribute to the sustainable energy use and transport within the port by blending.
In addition, the biogas plant opens promising synergy opportunities with the planned production of green hydrogen in the area. This will further advance the energy cluster. For example, captured biogenic CO₂ combined with green hydrogen can be used to produce sustainable fuels like methanol. These are new, high-value economic developments for the region, which will also support the sustainability goals of the Royal Netherlands Navy and the offshore sector.
As a port authority, we are pleased to welcome Nature Energy, as it will help advance our port ambitions, climate goals, and regional prosperity.
